Simon Camacho founded the brand, but after his death in 1990, the Eiroa family purchased it five years later. This Cuban family, exiled since the revolution, had produced tobacco and cigars for generations. They moved production from Nicaragua to Honduras and focused on high-quality manufacturing.

By the 2000s, Camacho had gained recognition as one of the most popular cigar brands in the United States. In 2008, the Oettinger Group, which owns Davidoff and other brands, acquired Camacho. Despite the acquisition, the Eiroa family still owns the fields.
