Melanio Oliva began cultivating tobacco in Pinar del Río, Cuba, in 1886. His work paused during the Cuban War of Independence but resumed after the war. In the 1920s, Melanio’s son Facundo took over the family’s tobacco fields, continuing the tradition for decades.

When Communism reshaped Cuba’s tobacco industry, Facundo’s son Gilberto shifted to brokering tobacco. By the 1960s, he began searching for land to replicate Cuba’s unique flavour. His journey led him to Honduras, Panama, Mexico, and the Philippines before he found the perfect soil in Nicaragua.

Today, the Oliva family stands as Nicaragua’s second-largest grower of Cuban-seed tobacco. Their dedication to traditional curing, blending, and rolling has earned their cigars top industry ratings, including Cigar of the Year in 2014 for the Oliva Serie V Melanio Figurado.
